I am always on the look out for information on retinal repairs. The “bionic eye” option has come up a number of times recently. to backtrack slightly, for those who aren’t regular readers, I have retinal scarring in my right eye and am, for all legal intents and purposes (not to be confused with intensive purposes) blind in that eye. I can see peripherally, but not directly forward.
So I was reading about this sort of tiny microscope that gets implanted in the eye; that seemed sort of interesting, but scary. Moving on, I was in Barnes and Nobles yesterday looking at an issue of Popular Science and they had a long article on bionic prosthetic devices. Very interesting. A woman with a bionic arm that attached to the stub of her upper arm and ended in a five fingered sensitive hand.
Then there was a marine lt. colonel who had two prosthetic legs and a young boy who had ear implants and now can hear. Then it went on to describe an older woman who had a retinal implant done. She can now detect shapes with that eye. We are making progress here. I think in another five years I’ll be able to get something done.
So while I am on the subject of bionics, News of the Weird had a piece on a guy who has a remote control sphincter. He had thirteen operations to try to help his bowel control issues, but then doctors took a bit out of his leg muscle, wrapped it around his ‘exit strategy’ and hooked up some kind of remote control that sends electrical signals to the muscle to relax or contract so he can do the doo. Hoepfully the control doesn’t look anything like the telly remote, or that could get ugly.
