Avatar and other movie ‘news’

We went to see Avatar today at the local IMAX theater. 3D extravaganza. Totally amazing movie. From the story to the effects and all. Kept our interest for the entire two plus hours and Deb said she wished it could have gone on another hour.

She doesn’t like sci-fi, so that last sentence is really saying something. I do like sci-fi, considerably, and I thought it was excellent down to the smallest details.

For another review, check out this story on CNN

I’ve heard it compared to Dances with Wolves, and I can see that. A ‘modern’ man gets involved with natives to the point that he questions his loyalties and all that. Respect for the land and life. Fair enough. I liked both movies, even though they really were only similar in broad strokes.

On another front, we also have seen a stream of older movies that are totally worth mentioning. Death at a Funeral is a freakin riot. I had tears coming out of my eyes and both of us were really laughing loudly, which is unusual. On a totally different front we saw The Ultimate Gift which is an allegory about thinking about what is really important in life. It’s based on the book by Jim Stovall, who was interviewed on the Get Inspired Project recently.

We also saw a Bill Murray film called Broken Flowers. Interesting story of a man searching for his son. Looking up lost loves to try to find the truth. I really liked it, Deb did too, until the end. She didn’t care for the ending, I thought it worked.

Anyway, these all came from the library system, as did the one we’re going to watch tonight, Bonneville. These are all sort of independent films, sort of unknown (at least to me) but really good. It’s amazing what libraries have turned into since I was a kid. Such a great resource that most people don’t take advantage of. (sentence ending on a preposition, my teachers would shoot me)

You can go to their online catalog and search and order movies, books, tapes, whatever from all over the interconnected system and they deliver them to the local branch. I love it.

I am also reading “The Real Wizard of Oz” which is the story of L. Frank Baum, who may or may not be a distant relative of mine, and I am reading “The State of Jones” which is a non-fiction account of Jones county, Mississippi that seceded from the Confederate States during the Civil War. Very interesting  stuff. The original information came right from the leader of the group as he was interviewed in the early part of the 1900′s.
