Bailing Out

Here’s the latest, and I thank my wife (see  www.TheSpiralPath.net ) for tipping me off on this one. Locally we had a bit of a scandal as two prominent citizens were busted for growing 5 marijuana plants in their basement. Seems they were out for the evening and something happened at their city home that triggered their alarm system. The police were unable to contact them, and investigated the potential crime scene looking for foul play. When the police got to the basement they found what was described as a sophisticated growing set-up along with the five plants.

Appropriately, the couple was placed in jail with bail set at $1 million dollars. Certainly the bail was in proportion to their crime and situation, they probably had a few hundred dollars worth of pot in their basement, ready to be personally used. These desperate criminals were most likely highly dangerous, and ready to flee the country. Eventual sentencing would probably net them some community service and possibly parole. This fate was one sure to inspire international flight.

Upon further consideration, after a night in jail, the couple was released on their own recognizance. Somehow this modern day Bonnie and Clyde had obviously blinded the justice system to their sinister plot (of pot.)

How in the world did this miscarriage of justice occur? You might ask the question as well, but since I am writing, I guess I’ll ask. My guess is that common sense may have stepped onto the scene.  Mind you, it’s been years since we’ve seen much common sense.

Fast forward to today’s news… A man was pulled over by police with about $4,000 worth of cocaine in his car. Twenty bags of the stuff. Was this also for his own consumption? Was he growing it in his trunk? No mention of a sophisticated system of manufacture, but we have to suspect that it may have been for distribution. Who travels around with that sort of thing at 1:30 AM? Another desperate criminal, certainly worthy of another hefty bail amount. Bail set at what, $1 million, maybe two?? No, in this case only $50,000.

Some sort of disparity in the system? We all know that cocaine is a gateway drug to even harder impacting drugs like marijuana, which has been known to lead to tobacco use. What’s next? Stay tuned…
